Born under the shinning sun of the eternal Caribbean summer and based in New York City (NYC) for 30 years to date, Rolando R. is a musician, freelance writer, performer, and producer of many cultural and community events.
A spiritual activist, Rolando is a community organizer by training and has worked with various non-profit organizations. In 2007-2010 he contributed to leading a major campaign that secured $1 million in compensation for community residents affected by forced displacement in NYC. Rolando has also conducted research for the NYC Department of Education, has facilitated many community workshops, and has been a guest speaker in college courses. He was a member of NYC Community Board 12 representing Washington Heights, was also an AmeriCorps and Public Allies fellow, and is a graduate of the Center for Neighborhood Leadership.
Rolando’s concern with social justice is grounded on his sense of spirituality and the belief that we are all interconnected, and consequently responsible for being of service to others. This commitment to service runs through his music, writings, performances, workshops, events, and all of his various, ever-evolving creative undertakings. He has spent time living in ashrams (monastic communities) studying eastern philosophies, and has been involved in many volunteering efforts that range from teaching and working in soup kitchens and food distribution centers, to visiting immigrant detainees in deportation procedures.
Rolando was the creator and director of an alternative cultural space in NYC, and was also a contributor to Positive Music Radio. He served as music coordinator for the Rockland Center for Spiritual Living and is a member of the emPower Music Arts Network. Rolando holds a bachelors degree in philosophy from Columbia University, and has done extensive graduate work at Hunter College in the areas of urban affairs, community development and non-profit management.
